AI tools need purpose

Last week, I hosted a training session with an incubator on using AI for sales leads.

A government contractor there asked about proposal analysis. "With so many AI tools out there, where do I start?" she wondered, facing a tight bid deadline.

Like most leaders, she had tried ChatGPT.

I shared the THINK framework I use with clients.

Instead of diving into tools, I asked: "What tasks do you hate doing? And what must you do anyway?"

Her answer came fast - proposal writing. She had a bid due in two days.

"Could we get this done faster?" she asked.

"I've done this many times. Let me show you."

Using THINK, we identified her bottlenecks:

  • Reviewing RFPs

  • Doing compliance checks

  • Time spent writing drafts

In 10 minutes, we created a CustomGPT with her past proposals. Her bid is due tomorrow, and what seemed impossible now looks simple.

She built a workflow that expanded her team's capacity with one AI tool.

That's what THINK is all about. Instead of drowning in AI tools, identify what's holding you back. Maybe it's endless emails, spreadsheets, or writing proposals.

Pick a time-stealing task. That's your starting point.

Success with AI isn't about tools; it's about applying the right tool for a purpose.
