Make Decisions Faster with ChatGPT

Compound Leverage

Issue #0023

Last week, I gave a keynote about the power of taking a business-first approach to AI. One of the biggest benefits of using this technology is its ability to help you make decisions faster, execute better, and get results quicker.

Many people ask me, “How can I do this?” So today, I want to walk you through an example inspired by a conversation I had recently with an HR director at an automotive parts manufacturer.

My friend, an HR director, mentioned a challenge his team faces: they spend hours working through spreadsheets to identify training gaps and conduct wage assessments. The complexity of the task slows down their ability to act on insights and make decisions that move the business forward.

But here's the thing—it doesn’t have to be that complicated. Whether you’re analyzing training gaps, deciding on spending, or trying to figure out which opportunities to pursue, AI tools like ChatGPT can streamline these processes.

The key is to focus on the decision you’re trying to make.

To simplify any decision-making process, break it into three key components:

  1. The Data: What information do you need to decide?

  2. The Analysis: How will you analyze that data to get insights?

  3. The Recommendation: What do you think you should do based on those insights?

Let’s say you’re trying to decide whether to approve training programs for different departments. Usually, you’d gather data, analyze spreadsheets, and manually sort through trends. Here’s how ChatGPT can simplify it.

Step 1: Start with a clear question.
Ask yourself: What am I trying to find out? Do you know how this will help me?

For example: “I want to know which departments have the largest skills gaps so we can prioritize training programs effectively.”

Here’s a simple prompt you can use to leverage ChatGPT:

“I have training data for five departments, including metrics like current skills ratings, performance reviews, and number of employees requesting training. Analyze this data to identify the departments with the largest skills gaps and recommend which training programs to prioritize.”

ChatGPT can analyze patterns, highlight gaps, and provide actionable recommendations, saving you hours of manual effort.

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Think about any repetitive task you do with spreadsheets or data analysis.

Then, use ChatGPT to combine data, summarize trends, and deliver recommendations. It works for everything from budgeting decisions to customer segmentation.

Next time you’re mulling over a decision for your business, try this approach:

  1. Define the data, analysis, and recommendation components.

  2. Use a structured prompt like the one above.

  3. See how much faster you can make decisions—and get better results.
